With big game hunting seasons quickly approaching, now is a great time to start to prepare your hunting rifles for the field. Here are a few basic but always important tips for getting yours ready for the season. Set the sights: Even if your rifle was zeroed in perfectly the last time you used it, you need to get on a range and dial it in, because even minor jostling in storage and transport could have knocked the sights out of true. Many whitetail hunters prefer a 100-yard zero while those who hunt elk or mule deer in more open country might choose a 200-yard zero. Use the proper load: Use premium bullets to make sure you get the knockdown power, and accuracy, you need to optimize your rifle. It’s also important to match your load to the game you’re hunting. Bullet choice for larger game like moose or elk should have a thicker jacket and a bonded core to help with penetration and ensure a clean kill. Clean it, then foul it: A well-maintained rifle will be more accurate and reliable.

The opening of Dove Season is like a cultural event in the American South. In Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi and other surrounding states, the opening of the season marks the coming of autumn—and more hunting seasons to follow.  This season, thousands of hunters, their families and their hunting dogs gather to set out in pursuit of mourning doves, white-winged doves and collared doves. Some locations are so popular that state wildlife management offices will set quotas and hold a lottery for first-day access. It’s a challenging task because doves are small and nimble, flying up to 55 miles an hour with sharp dives and quick changes in direction. It takes quick reflexes and a keen eye to bag these birds. The hunt usually begins at noon, but among many groups, the season “officially” kicks off when the first hunter fires. (Investigations are ongoing by FWS and WGFD regarding grizzly bear attacks on two hunters in Wyoming.) Recent bear attacks on two hunters in Wyoming have once again established the extensive presence of grizzly bears in the region. While both hunters survived, these two incidents have put FWS and WGFD on high alert. As per comments released by WGFD — Wyoming Game and Fish Department  — the first of the two attacks took place on September 24th towards the evening. The incident took place in the elk hunting area of Thorofare. The injured hunter was hospitalized after being airlifted from the site of the attack. The following Saturday, there was another grizzly bear attack that occurred on Rattlesnake Mountain. The bear charged at an archery hunter in the region west of Cody. Thankfully, the hunter escaped unharmed and the bear was hunted down. The Fish and Wildlife Service of the US is getting assistance from WGFD in these investigations.
